JobPlace Listserv

Welcome to the JobPlace listserv, the professional, knowledge-based, listserv group sponsored by your association, the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

The purpose of the NACE Communities is to encourage discussion within specific interest areas, with the goal of keeping online discussions targeted to the needs and interests of the subscribers.  NACE Communities are open to all staff members at NACE member offices. You must register for each Community you wish to join.

All the commands you need to join any of the Communities are included on this page.

Web-Based Access

Everything you need to do to register and participate in JobPlace can be done online.—you can subscribe, talk to fellow JobPlace members and read their messages to the group, change your subscription e-mail address, unsubscribe, read the archives, or change your settings at any time.

How to Join the JobPlace Listserv

Staff members in any NACE member office may subscribe to JobPlace.

To subscribe or to leave JobPlace, log in here.

Enter the required information (your e-mail address, your name, and your password) and click on the subscribe button. Note: Use the same e-mail address and password for all your subscriptions. Doing so will make it easy to set all of your subscriptions to "no mail" when you go on vacation or reactivate your subscriptions when you return.

You will receive an e-mail confirmation when your subscription is approved by the list administrator.

Subscribe to JobPlace—Share career exploration and development ideas, research, techniques, and tips, including experiential education programs such as internships and cooperative education with colleagues from other colleges and universities.

Participating by E-mail

If you would prefer to participate in the online discussion by e-mail, send your messages to:

jobplace@lists.naceweb.org

To reply to a message, click on "reply" and type your message into the top of your e-mail. When you are finished typing your message—and have added your signature—go through the text below your message and delete everything except enough of the message you are replying to, to remind readers what you are discussing.

Please note: The first few messages you send to the JobPlace group will be held briefly in a queue so that NACE staff can monitor incoming and outgoing e-mail. This ensures that spam doesn't get sent to JobPlace listserv members.

Search

Search: To search the archives, click on "search" in the navigation bar. Use keyword(s) to search the archives. An advanced search is also available for narrowing your search results.

Messages retrieved by the search will display in a text box at the top of the page. Search results are displayed in chronological order with the newest posts appearing first.

To re-sort your search results, use the arrow keys next to Date, Subject, or Author. The up arrow sorts in ascending order; the down arrow sorts in descending order.

Select the messages you want to read by clicking on the subject line.

Use the back button on your browser to return to the search results screen.

My Account

Update your subscription: Click on "my account" in the upper navigation bar. A small box with two navigation tabs will appear. The first screen—the essentials tab—will allow you to change your e-mail address and choose the way you receive your e-mail messages.

To change your mail options, select your choice from the drop-down list.

No e-mail (if you plan to participate online only, choose this setting);

Normal (individual messages as they are sent to the community);

Digest (one message each day contains all the messages sent to the group that day); or

Mime (individual messages as they are sent to the community in MIME format); or

Index (a list of subject lines from messages sent to the community).

When you are finished, select "Save Changes" at the lower right side of the gray box.

The advanced tab will allow you to change the password on any or all subscriptions. Type in the password you want to use. Use the drop-down arrow next to "apply changes" at the bottom of the box to choose whether you want to apply changes to your data to just one community or to all communities using the same e-mail address and password.

When you go on vacation you can set all your subscriptions to "no mail" at the same time. When you return from vacation, you can reactivate all of your subscriptions at once.

When you are finished, select "Save Changes" at the lower right side of the gray box.

My Forums

If you click on "my forums" in the navigation bar at the top of the page, you can see all your subscribed communities—and unsubscribe from any/all if you would like.

If you need assistance, contact Claudia Allen.

Guidelines for Participation

Discussion within each of the NACE Communities is polite and professional. Common courtesy is expected. Please be patient: Some members have more experience with discussion group protocol than others—we were all new at some time.

While debate is welcome, flames—personal attacks—are not. You may not send harassing, libelous, defamatory, or obscene materials. Do not use ethnic slurs, racial epithets, or anything else that may be construed as disparagement or harassment of others. Curse words—or abbreviations of curse words—are prohibited.

Keep your messages short. State your opinion or question simply. Remember that e-mail is a cold medium: No one can see you smile, laugh, frown, or scowl. Be cautious with humor or cynicism—messages can be read "the wrong way."

Do not rely on your messages being confidential or private, even if a message is sent privately, to one person only. Do not send anything via the Internet that you would not be willing to say face-to-face to a co-worker or your employer.

Please note: The first few messages you send to the JobPlace group will be held briefly in a queue so that NACE staff can monitor incoming and outgoing e-mail. This ensures that spam doesn't get sent to JobPlace listserv members.
 Job Opportunities and Other Advertising

All advertising and commercial solicitation is strictly prohibited. Advertising includes: job opportunities, (please use Jobwire to advertise opportunities in your office),

  • career and job fairs,
  • books,
  • workshops,
  • conferences,
  • web-based services,
  • e-mail or online polls and/or focus groups, or
  • other career/recruitment resources.
  •

While a general discussion of professional resources is welcome on within the NACE Communities, discussion of a specific vendor, product, or resource will not be tolerated. NACE is not responsible for statements made by subscribers to any of the Communities as to the legitimacy of any business.

If you wish to get opinions or recommendations of a commercial product, please ask that all e-mail be directed to your e-mail box and not to the discussion group. Please share a summary of that information with colleagues by private e-mail only. Discussions of specific vendors or commercial products may not go through a Community.

Do not use a Community to address others regarding commercial, religious, or political causes.

Do not send promotional materials to the community. Self-promotion and referrals are not allowed in any form at any time.

Participation

Do not post messages for other people.

Discussion of most career services topics online is encouraged—even if you plan to post a summary to the community afterward. The give-and-take of a discussion is a lot like brainstorming—you need the back-and-forth between participants to fully explore a subject. If you want to respond to a comment or question, but don't feel your comments are relevant to the whole group, please respond privately to the e-mail. If you have any question about the appropriateness of your comments for the group, feel free to contact the list administrator for guidance.

If you post a question of interest to your colleagues, please collect the answers and send a summary of responses to the list. Your summary should include one copy of your original question and excerpts of the responses you receive. Include the e-mail addresses of the people who answer your question.

If information comes from a book, a newsletter, a magazine, a web site, a news group, another e-mail discussion group, or any other publication, the material may be copyrighted. Any copying and/or downloading of copyrighted material to a NACE Community must be with express written permission of the person or organization that owns the copyright. This includes copying of NACE materials. If you have any questions, contact Claudia Allen, NACE permissions editor.

Community members should indicate in their discussions whether they want to hear from vendors or suppliers. Vendors should reply to postings only to forward the discussion or to add information or ideas.

Please note: The first few messages you send to the JobPlace group will be held briefly in a queue so that NACE staff can monitor incoming and outgoing e-mail. This ensures that spam doesn't get sent to JobPlace listserv members.
 Formatting Your Messages

When posting a message to a community, please include your name, organization, and an e-mail address at the end of your message. You may include your title, a telephone number, and a fax number. Keep your signature short—no more than five lines.

Include a subject in the "subject line" of your message. This will help other Community members choose among the messages to read and respond to, and will make your questions/answers/discussion easier to find in the archives. For example, if you are discussing behavioral interviewing, use the words "behavioral interviewing" in the subject line. If you are offering a summary of information in answer to a particular question, use "summary of [topic]" to give community members an idea of what they will read when they open your message.

Do not copy entire previous messages into your message. If you are quoting another person or responding to a question or comment, delete whatever isn't directly relevant to your message.

Please post messages in Plain Text format. HTML and Rich Text formatting cannot be read by all e-mail software and may display with unreadable random characters.

No attachments are allowed. This includes attached text documents and the "business cards" that some e-mail software creates.

Copyright Information

While you own the copyright to your individual messages and materials that you place on JobPlace, NACE compiles the messages and materials on its server and owns the compilation of messages and materials. By subscribing to JobPlace, you are giving consent for NACE to use your messages in the compilation in any manner that NACE sees fit. NACE archives the compilation of messages and materials and makes them available to NACE members, NACE staff, and other, selected persons. The archives remain on NACEWeb. By subscribing to JobPlace, you are also consenting to this specific use of your messages on JobPlace and in the archives.
